The engineering design for a structural retrofit / re-modeling project is tied to the method statement and Logic of erection/installation of the replacement elements (within the context of the existing infrastructure, from which the “new” building will emerge), as well as the underlying constraints/assumptions in the applicable construction process.

 

Consequently, the strategy/logic of implementation is implicitly tied to the design process; its (Schedule plan) is not a plug-in that commences after the engineering has been resolved.

 

If the engineering design was carried out by an organization apart from that which eventually implements the repairs/retrofit details; then there must be synergy between both sides to trash out all design/construction challenges that could emerge. Otherwise, chaos will result in the implementation of the project plan – unbuildable working drawings, under-scoped Bills of quantities, poorly developed Standards & Specifications, etc.
